The roller chain sprocket uses a chain with a pin, or roller, that rides in the root of the
tooth and rotates when contacting the teeth of the sprocket. The chain can be an infinite
length and is used to transmit power between, or to, multiple shafts.
Unlike spur or helical gears, roller chain sprockets can be used to bridge great
distances between shafts simply by the use of a chain.
Idler sprockets are often used to take up the slack of the chain or to change the
direction of the drive.
Roller chain sprockets are more popular in the food industry where they are used to power conveyer lines. Most of these sprockets need to be FDA approved because of the presence of food. Therefore, various types of stainless steels are used with a finishing operation of either passivating or electropolishing to make them FDA compliant. We can make roller chain sprockets as small as 1" in diameter with a ¼" pitch to 60" in diameter with a 2" pitch. |

Gear cutting is a precise business. Every gear, sprocket and pulley we cut at Edgerton Gear must be exactly right. Or it's wrong. And unacceptable for us and our customers. Every gear we ship will be to precise customer specification, without exception. Or we will promptly replace it at no additional cost. |
