Gear Products

Gear cutting is a precise business. Every gear, sprocket and pulley we cut at Edgerton Gear must be exactly right. Or it's wrong. And unacceptable for us and our customers.

Every gear we ship will be to precise customer specification, without exception. Or we will promptly replace it at no additional cost.

Sprockets

We manufacture two types of sprockets, roller chain sprockets and silent chain sprockets. The roller chain sprocket uses a chain with a pin, or roller, that rides in the root of the tooth and rotates when contacting the teeth of the sprocket. The chain can be an infinite length and is used to transmit power between, or to, multiple shafts. Unlike spur or helical gears, roller chain sprockets can be used to bridge great distances between shafts simply by the use of a chain. Idler sprockets are often used to take up the slack of the chain or to change the direction of the drive.

Roller chain sprockets are more popular in the food industry where they are used to power conveyer lines. Most of these sprockets need to be FDA approved because of the presence of food. Therefore, various types of stainless steels are used with a finishing operation of either passivating or electropolishing to make them FDA compliant. We can make roller chain sprockets as small as 1" in diameter with a ¼" pitch to 60" in diameter with a 2" pitch.

Silent chain, or inverted tooth chain, sprockets are used primarily for the transmission of mechanical power between rotating shafts. The links of silent chain form rows of straight-sided teeth extending across the width of the inside of the chain which engage straight flank teeth on the sprockets. Because of the sliding action of the links, the engagement between sprocket and chain results in a quiter operation. We often see this application used on older printing presses that were engineered before the availability of the many versions of timing belt pulleys.

Timing Belt Pulleys

Timing Belt Pulleys are a relatively new invention in the power transmission industry. As the name implies, a belt is used between the pulleys instead of a chain. These pulleys have teeth, similar to gears that match the grooves, or teeth in the belt. The belts are comprised of different compounds of plastic, rubber, and other materials that minimize stretch and wear. Like sprockets, timing belt pulleys can be used to bridge great distances between parallel shafts. Their advantages are they don't require lubrication, can be run at very high speeds, and are very quiet Edgerton Gear, Inc. is a licensed manufacturer of HTD® and Gates Polychain® sprockets.

We can also cut other versions of timing belt pulleys, both American standard and metric. These pulleys can be made from a variety of materials such as steel, aluminum, nylon, and stainless steeel. They are mounted to shafts by either a conventional keyway and setscrew, or by using taperlock or QD style tapered bushings.
