Gear Quality

Quality Procedure Summary

Edgerton Gear's ability to deliver quality products in an extremely timely fashion is essentially a corporate-wide commitment. From the initial contact by the customer to the delivery of the parts, it is necessary for every employee to understand how they play a role in meeting and exceeding customer expectations. The following procedures are designed to keep us accountable to our commitment to quality and service.

Quality In Action!

Order Entry and Shop Routing:

All orders are to be checked by at least two people for their accuracy and requirements. This includes confirming print numbers, revisions, quantities, delivery dates, and any other customer specific requests. This double verification is accomplished by one person doing the standard order entry while the other person, who does the shop routing, verifies that all data entry is correct. If any discrepancy is found, corrective action is taken before the order gets to the shop floor, and when necessary, the customer is contacted to clarify any discrepancy.

In-Process Quality Control:

It is our belief that the efficient and most productive way to maintain the highest quality is to control it in process, rather than waiting until the part is finished. In order to do this, we place the burden of quality on the operators. Every job has a routing sheet that instructs the machinist as to sequence of operation and other pertinent information. The machinist must initial the routing sheet when his/her operation is complete. In addition, most jobs require inspections reports where another machinist must inspect the initial operator's work and record their findings on the inspection report. Orders of more than 10 pieces require a first piece inspection report. Orders of more than 10 pieces require a first piece inspection report as well as batch sampling of at least 10% of the order. These routings and inspection reports accompany the order until completion. These reports are filed with the invoice and shipping papers and are kept on file for 7 years. In addition, all this information is updated in our computer system daily so we have quick access to the status of the job as well as knowing who ran what operation.

All discrepancies are also to be recorded. In all cases, if an operator machines a part out of tolerance, a scrap report is filled out to note the discrepancy, why it happened, and how it will be corrected. In most cases, the piece is scrapped and we start over. However, if there is a question as to if the discrepancy is permissible, it is the responsibility of one of our production managers to make the final decision. The manager then calls the customer and allows the customer to either approve or disapprove. All of this is documented on the shop routing and inspection report.

Outsourcing Quality Control:

There are certain operations that require outside vendors such as heat treating, plating, special grinding and other machining operations we are not able to do in-house. In all cases, we inspect the work of our vendors and record the results on our inspection reports. If there is a discrepancy, we immediately contact the vendor and take corrective action.

Final Inspection & Shipping:

All parts are visually inspected before shipping. In certain cases, some customer require us to do a precision final inspection. These results are also recorded and filed with the job. Some customers require us to send a copy of an inspection report. It is the responsibility of our shipping department to make sure that all appropriate paperwork accompany the shipment and to follow customer specific instructions concerning billing, shipping and couriers.

Our shipping department understands that their duties are just as important as those of the machinists. It is imperative our products arrive to our customers in perfect condition and in a timely manner. The shop routing shows documentation of who deburred the parts, stamped the parts with proper identification, and prepared the product for shipping. The weight, date shipped, and courier used is also recorded on the shop traveler.

Conclusion

Customer satisfaction is our goal, not paperwork. Almost 40 years of serving our customers has taught us we need a system of checks and balances to keep us from repeating our mistakes. The above procedures have evolved to aid us in being focused on our goal while not being overwhelmed by paperwork. We are constantly striving to improve and encourage everyone's ideas and suggestions.
