How many of us today would have the courage and nerve to leave a secure job and home to start a machine shop in a small rural town with no industry, while trying to raise three little girls under the ages of seven, and another child on the way? Incredibly, that is exactly what Richard and Nona Hataj did in 1962, as they fled suburban Chicago to start a new life in the country and a new business, known today as Edgerton Gear, Inc. |

Dick and Nona brought two lathes with them from Chicago where Dick had learned machining. They struggled for seven years to build the business and raise the family. Dick's uncle backed loans so he could buy a power hacksaw and a hobber. Piece by piece, the business grew. After operating in several locations around Edgerton, Wisconsin, Edgerton Gear became the first to build in Edgerton's new industrial park in 1991, its current location. Edgerton Gear's reputation spread by word of mouth even through the recession of the early 90s. Unquestionably, the history of the business is a success story. It is easy to look at how prosperous Edgerton Gear is today and forget the sacrifice and hard work that has made it what it is. But in order for us to take pride in the future, we must first appreciate the past. In remembering and honoring Edgerton Gear's humble beginnings and values, we can lay a course for a promising future that rests on the work ethic and values that have been the mortar and glue of this company for more than 40 years.
